State Parks
High Bridge Trail State Park
High Bridge Trail State Park, which bisects Farmville’s Main Street, offers 32.2 miles of scenic paths perfect for those searching for “walking trails near me” or looking to explore some of the best horseback riding trails in Virginia. Only four and a half miles from downtown, you’ll find the historic High Bridge — spanning the Appomattox at 2,400 feet long and 125 feet high. Among the longest bridges in the United States, the High Bridge holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a Virginia Historic Landmark.

Twin Lakes State Park
Twin Lakes State Park, VA, holds a place of historic significance as the only pre-Civil Rights Era state park for African Americans. Today, the twin lakes offer all visitors prime spots for boating, fishing and swimming. You’ll also enjoy ranger-led educational programming and plenty of hiking trails, as well as pavilions, campsites and cabins available by reservation.

Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historic State Park
Sailor’s Creek Battlefield State Park offers events and living history programs that teach visitors about the Appomattox Campaign and the final battles of the Civil War. In addition to trails and interpretive signs, Sailor’s Creek offers tours of the historic Overton-Hillsman house, used as a field hospital.

Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest
Established as Virginia’s first state forest, the 6,491-acre Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest is a landscape of towering hardwoods, managed pines and flowing waterways. Two rivers run through the property, and at the heart of the forest, Twin Lakes State Park offers visitors a mix of history, recreation and year-round outdoor adventure.
